The Lawrence H. Lanzl Institute of Medical Physics
Dedicated to human betterment through medical physics research and education
The Lanzl Institute is proudly named after the late Dr. Lawrence H. Lanzl,
a pioneer both in developing effective radiation treatment of cancer and in directly
furthering the development of radiation treatment centers throughout the world. It
is located in Seattle, Washington, U.S.A., as seen in the picture to the left. Dr.
Lanzl's career and the work of the Lanzl Institute are described elsewhere.
An important activity of the Lanzl Institute has been its sponsorship of a series of workshops on the application of electron and photon transport theory to radiation dose calculation, bringing together scientists from the fields of medical physics and nuclear engineering to discuss their work in an informal atmosphere. The first workshop, held in September 1995 in Seattle, drew 43 scientists from Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and the United States. The second workshop, held in June 1997 in Seattle, had 35 participants from Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan, the People's Republic of China, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and the United States. These workshops were organized by a committee consisting of Alex Bielajew, David Jette, and Edward Larsen. The following information is available on these workshops:

Recent research at the Lanzl Institute has concerned the use of very strong magnetic fields to concentrate the radiation dose in photon (x-ray) beams. Very large dose enhancements are possible.
